Discover Writing Practices and Learn about the Book Process
I’m offering a course that demystifies the book publishing process and covers ways aspiring authors can practice, improve, or just plain START the habit of writing.
Why? I want to help people like you!
Maybe you want to write but don’t know where to start. Or, maybe you’ve started writing but have no idea what to do with what you’ve written.
Is that you? If so, this course is for YOU!

How the Course Works
For six weeks, we’ll Zoom once a week for 60-90 minutes (depending upon how much time we need for questions, etc.).
One or two sessions will be purely informational, but for the rest, we’ll cultivate your work through exercises to give you hands-on practice of what we talk about.
Oh—and did I mention homework?
Each week, you’ll have an assignment. But don’t worry—it will be something easy like, “Find a book you like.” Some weeks will also have an “overachiever option” for people who want to go deeper.
What’s in the Course?
Types of Books
Most people want to write one of three types of books: fiction and two types of nonfiction (memoir and prescriptive, like self-help, leadership, etc.). We’ll discuss things you’ll need to think about for each type of book.
Writing—How to Start, Practice, and Improve It
Many people get stuck here—actually starting to write. Still, even people who have started writing can benefit from techniques we’ll cover.
We’ll talk about:
- How to get past the fear of the blank page/writer’s block, etc.
- Ways to practice writing, so you can not only get more comfortable, but better at it!
- Tips on how to write more effectively.
From Inside Your Head to the Bookshelf
Aaaaaahhh . . . publishing. The Holy Grail.
- You’ll get an overview of the steps it takes to see your name in print.
- We’ll create a sample outline for a book and discuss why you might or might not want to start with that.
- I’ll cover three paths to publishing and tell you what to watch out for.
- I’ll also explain how book industry professionals charge and what it takes to get an agent and/or publisher.
Resources
Once we’ve wrapped up the course, you won’t be left hanging! You’ll get a list of resources to further explore almost everything we talk about, and I’ll explain each one in class.
I Want to Empower
Why would anyone put together a course like this for such a low price?
Since I’m a ghostwriter who writes memoir and self-help for ESL authors and authors writing about mental wellness and neurodivergence, people often sidle up to me and share something like:
- “I’ve always wanted to write a book.”
- “God is calling me to write a book.”
- “People always tell me, ‘You should write a book!’”
And I love it—I LOVE talking to people about their ideas.
Two Obstacles

Gentle as I try to be, though, once I explain the publishing process, it hurts my heart to see the light start dying in the person’s eyes. It can all seem overwhelming, scary – even impossible to someone unfamiliar with books or writing.
I want to change that.
I want to make the process less scary, and the best way to do that is to arm you with info.
Then there’s the writing. As a developmental and line editor, I review people’s writing regularly. Writing levels vary a lot, but three things usually keep someone’s great idea from being an interesting read:
- The writing puts you to sleep.
- Poor grammar, spelling, and language mechanics are distracting.
- Lack of organization makes it hard to follow the thought/story.
An editor can only do so much. A freelancer who used to work for a top publishing company wrote in an article I read last year (paraphrased):
As an editor, I only improve someone’s manuscript by raising it one level. I can take something bad and make it mediocre, take something mediocre and make it decent. But unless the writing is already good, I can’t make it great.
What does that mean for YOU? If you want a manuscript that appeals to agents, publishers, and readers, you MUST write, practice writing, and proactively work to improve your writing.
Let me show you how.
